Introduction

Donald watson’s vegan cheese making kit contains everything needed to create your very own vegan cheese at home.

This package is designed to take a new approach to current vegan food packaging, raising it to a higher level akin to conventional speciality cheeses.

This package features text in French and in English.

Description

The construction of this package design is meant to be beautiful on its own, as something that could be given as a gift or reused for years to come.

Cheese is something that many find difficult to replace in a vegan diet, many store bought cheeses just don’t make the cut. Homemade however, is absolutely delicious. So creating a product that would make the process of making homemade vegan cheese more accessible was the aim for this project.

This kit includes an instruction manual, small jars for the ingredients, and a large glass form with lid for forming the cheese into a wheel. The packaging was designed around these items to hold them securely in place as well as to make for an enjoyable unboxing experience.

The box itself is a cube with three sides that fold out to expose the interior contents. These three sides are held closed by the ribbon at the top that also doubles as a handle. Within the box is a tray with four laser cut holes that the jars fit into, below this is another box which contains the cheese form.

Process

This project involved the designing of branding, as well as developing the package itself.

This was a process of trial and error in order to develop a box that would be sturdy enough to hold the contents, but with movable joints that allow it to open. As well as designing the closing mechanism, that involved figuring the right size for the cut holes in the top for allowing the ribbon to pass through while also holding all panels in place.

I used what I have learned in bookbinding in order to create the joints using mull cloth to reinforce the joints, and book board for creating the panels.

The designs of this package were chosen to give it a minimal and luxurious look. The texture was created using a dry grafitti marker, this organic texture provides a natural warm element to the simple design. Branding and text on these panels was printed on warm-toned cotton paper, and the box is wraped in a black on black pinstriped paper.
